The Gold Survey was first produced in 1967 by London-based mining conglomerate Consolidated Gold Fields (CGF). When CGF was taken over by Hanson in 1989, the gold mining companies in the CGF group decided to ensure the survival of the Gold Survey, which had by then been established as an indispensable reference source on the gold market, and GFMS was set up to continue the work. At the time the company was virtually exclusively focused on producing the annual Gold Survey. In time, the Gold Survey Updates, Platinum & Palladium Survey and World Silver Survey were added to the range of publications, as the company continued to expand its reach into the precious metals markets.
During the period from 1994 until June 1998, GFMS was wholly owned by Gold Fields of South Africa, although the GFMS team always retained editorial control over the contents of its publications. The merger in 1998 between Gold Fields of South Africa and Gencor created an opportunity for GFMS to attain complete independence.
In mid-August 1998, a management buy out of GFMS was completed by Philip Klapwijk, Paul Walker and Hester le Roux. In its new guise, GFMS continued to expand, both in terms of the size of its team and the range of products and services it provided.
In August 2011, GFMS became a part of Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters is the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals and the acquisition of GFMS strengthens its offerings to the metals sector by combining GFMS’s powerful forecast analytics and rich fundamentals content with Thomson Reuters leading news and pricing service.
